Since the Cold War spans almost fifty years of history, this topic is divided into two units: Part One (1945-1963) and Part Two (1964-1991). This section will concentrate on American foreign policy during the presidential administrations of Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, and John Kennedy. See the study guide for topics of discussion.

This episode should be viewed after a lecture about McCarthyism. Click here to watch the episode. After listening to a lecture and video, students will write an Op-Ed to the local newspaper (assuming you have previously introduced students to the methods of writing an Op-Ed). Students will choose a side, either against McCarthy's Senate hearings or in favor of McCarthy's actions. Students will get one primary document (newspaper article about university professors losing their jobs because they were targeted by McCarthy).
